TV White Space Frequency Spectrum
Large amounts of lower UHF band spectrum, between 470 and 806 MHz was originally blocked for over-the-air television broadcasting. These frequencies are currently not fully used by TV broadcasters, are reconfigured and provide opportunities to wireless internet providers. TV White Space or TVWS by its definition refers to the internet broadband technology that transmits and receives radiocommunication signals in portions of the broadcast television bands.
“TV white spaces can play a critical role in providing broadband services to rural and underserved areas,” said Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai. Specifically, Chairman Pai is proposing to permit higher transmit power and higher antennas for fixed white space devices in rural areas. If adopted, these changes would allow white space devices to reach users at greater distances, thus enabling improved broadband coverage. Higher power would also enable signals to better penetrate foliage, buildings and other obstacles. (see FCC Chairman Pai Proposes Updating TV White Space Rules)
WiDOX technology utilizes spectrum in TV White Space. WiDOX technology covers large area from one single antenna because of high transmit power and high placement of sectorial antennas.
WiDOX High Power TVWS provides opportunities for broadband services especially in remote communities.
WiDOX High Power TV White Space
Not all TV White Space technologies are capable of using spectrum band at its full capacities.
WiDOX High Power TVWS technology is achieving optimal spectrum use by:
- high power transmit;
- operation over multiple channels;
- full-duplex;
- large area coverage;
- sectorial spectrum reuse;
- DOCSIS standards;
- R&D of the Cable TV Industry;
- R&D of Advintive that was awarded by Government of Canada;
- development of Base Station equipment;
- development of Customer Premise Equipment;
- reliable commercial grade equipment;
- multicasting capability;
- phone line services;
- quality of service prioritization;
- remote maintenance and configuration…

WiDOX = High Power TV White Space
Low Power TVWS uses a maximum of 4 Watts of Power. WiDOX High Power TVWS uses as much 20 Watts of real power and as much as 500 Watts of Effective Radiated Power.
Low Power TVWS systems the signal degrades quickly with foliage, rain, snow and other weather conditions. WiDOX High Power TVWS does not degrade as quickly because of high power utilization.
WiDOX = High Bandwidth TV White Space
Low Power TVWS can utilize a maximum of 3 channels of TV spectrum (18 MHz). WiDOX High Power TVWS system can currently can 48 MHz with DOCSIS 3.0 equipment and up to 192 MHz using DOCSIS 3.1 equipment for downstream.
Low Power TVWS systems can provide a maximum downstream data rate of 75 Mbps. WiDOX High Power TVWS client can receive over 300 Mbps downstream data rate.
WiDOX High Power TVWS uses Frequency Division Multiplexing with increased bandwidth capability and higher modulation capability to provide substantially higher data throughput.
Low Power TVWS are high latency systems. High latency means loss of packets and slowdown of throughput. Because of DOCSIS technology, WiDOX High Power TVWS’ latency is very low.
WiDOX = High Performance TV White Space
Low Power TVWS system are normally half-duplex. WiDOX High Power TVWS is Full-Duplex, Downstream and Upstream work at the same time.
With Low Power TVWS systems, the downstream data rate drops with distance from the Base Station. With WiDOX High Power TVWS the downstream data rate does not drop with distance from the Tower.
WiDOX = High Coverage TV White Space
Low Power TVWS systems have a maximum coverage of around 300 sq. km. WiDOX High Power TVWS covers over 3,000 sq. km from one single tower.
WiDOX = High Capabilities TV White Space
Low Power TVWS system do not use commercial grade equipment. WiDOX High Capabilities TVWS uses equipment developed and continuosly improved, based on DOCSIS standards. Customer equipment provides services as:
- multicast;
- phone line with high level of voice quality at a low bit rate g729 codec;
- pre-set speeds with quality of service prioritization;
- WiFi and router;
- remote provisioning and maintenance;
WiDOX = High Reliability TV White Space
WiDOX High Power TVWS Base Station equipment is continuosly improved by experienced Advintive engineering team. After installation, it is remotelly monitored and maintained.
WiDOX High Power TVWS customer premise equipment is not only commercially graded, but also continuosly improved by Advintive engineering team.
Advintive spends research and development hours, months and years to improve WiDOX High Power TVWS design and was awarded by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada multiple times.
WiDOX = High Affordability TV White Space
WiDOX High Power TVWS is best solution for remote communities, where houses are spread over a large area.
WiDOX High Power TVWS can provide high speed Internet and other services without necessity of laying cables in large distances.
WiDOX High Power TVWS reuses the spectrum twice by utilization of sectorial antennas.
